Why our singing lessons are getting results. by Ian J Helm

Unlike other music lessons you may undertake, like learning guitar or piano, there is no set structure when giving vocal tuition. When approaching the guitar for the first time, everyone learns how to correctly hold their instrument, how to strum or stroke the strings, how to get the different notes to sound etc.

Once the basics have been learnt, the instruments will basically sound the same. Only after years of practice will an individual develop their own sound and even then it will be nuances.

The human voice on the other hand is as individual as DNA has decreed. It therefore stands to reason that everyone need to approach singing lessons with a bespoke, personal plan of action that will get the best results from what nature gave them.

I have learned that many vocal coaches or singing tutors stick rigid to a set of pre-written, textbook lessons in order to asses and grade at levels 1, 2, 3 etc. This to me seems ridiculous. You can’t give the same fitness plan to everyone without harming someone along the way. The same thing goes with singing.

Each and every voice is made up from the sounds created in an individuals vocal tract. Some voices are naturally powerful but need control; some may be slight and mousy and need to be amplified. Some people have a wonderful sense of pitch were as others have hardly any!

It usually takes 2 or 3 lessons before we can access where to concentrate our efforts for fast results. By results I mean singing with confidence and in tune. Once a student can sing in public then confidence usually follows. After that it’s more a case of what that individual wishes to achieve, not what we wish to teach them!

We tend to try and leave style out until we’re sure a singer can use their ears as well as their voice to hit the right notes. Once that’s been achieved then whatever style suits is fine by use. If rockin’ out does it for you then ‘rock on’ we will. If Performing Broadway or West-end show tunes is your bag then let’s go there. R n B? Gospel? Punk? What ever floats your boat!
